According to J.W.L. Glaire (1903), the earliest version of the Book of theMonk was composed (c. 1195) by Roger, Archbishop of Rouen, the Legate ofthe Holy Roman Church in England, as a result of a visit to the Englishmonastery of St. Albans in 1151. The oldest extant narrative manuscriptis found in the library of the Augustine Abbey of St. Alban's in the City ofLondon, the original home of Chaucer’s library. It is preserved in MS Harley3940, written in the 13th century, with a few verses in French addedad hoc by an unknown hand and dated \"Circa Anno Domini xxx.\" (circa AD1814).Although the Harley manuscript has been dated to the final years of Chaucer’slife (i.e., the early 1380s), the poem dates back to the earlieststages of his literary career, i.e., its first appearance in 1409 CE. The Harlaxton MS, written at the tail end of the 13th century, is preservedin the Bodleian Library at Oxford, MS Bodley 732. The MS is incomplete tosome degree, but five of the most important parts have survived using 39 extantpages and several scattered leaves. The MS contains three portions. All threehave the same opening lines, nearly three hundred lines in length, but differalong the way. The first part, “The Tale of the Three Princes” was transmittedin the Summa of 1563 and later updated by Joseph Lazar in 1790.In the Harlaxton MS, the second part is entitled The Tale of Chaucer’s Shipwreck. The third part contains only two lines but is titled “The Priour of Blackheath”.
It is clear that al-Kulliyyt focuses on illness with the aim ofadvancing knowledge about them. This is evident in the nature of thematerial, which is derived, in large measure, from medical authorities(medical books). He cites dozens of books, including his own, drawingfrom them not to present data, but to establish general principles andfoundations from which particular cases might be deduced. There is abasic list of them (Kulliyyt VI.61), but many of them are not dealt within the medical section. 7211a4ac4a
